Eastside at STLP

Hang on for a minute...we're trying to find some more stories you might like.

On April 22, Eastside’s multimedia production and computer gaming classes competed in the State STLP event held at Heritage Hall and Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky. The gaming students got to show off the original game they created, while the media students presented a showcase about Eastside’s use of social media. The judges ranked Eastside’s showcase among the top 50 out of almost 2,000 schools and organizations that competed, which is a tremendous accomplishment. Alexa Stilley, one of the presenters for the showcase, says, “I thought it [the showcase] did really well. I’m kinda surprised we didn’t get top 10, especially with finding out that our score was 95 out of 100, but knowing that and not seeing the ones that did win, theirs must have been pretty awesome. I’m content with how well we did.”

pic5A lot of work was put into creating the showcase; Eastside’s collision tech class assembled and painted the board based off of the design from the media students. When the first phase was completed the media students gathered photos and cut out words to bring the showcase to full completion. For Eastside’s social media platforms (i.e. Facebook, Instagram, etc.) many photos were taken over the course of the school year and uploaded to the social sites. These were presented to the judges during the showcase, and they had nothing but high praise on how Eastside utilized it’s social media to counter the stereotypes and inform more people about what Eastside is all about. Zakary Smiley, a media student who attended STLP, had very positive things to say about the showcase, “I thought our showcase was one of the best I’ve seen as I was walking around. It’s gonna really help Eastside to get out there in the state of Kentucky, and for people to learn about our technical center.”

While it was fun for the students to compete, they also got the opportunity to hang out and spend more time with each other. Students from the morning classes rarely get a chance to interact with the afternoon students face to face, and this experience got to strengthen their bonds with each other. Josh Wooldridge, another media student who attended STLP, stated, “I feel like the first time we went to STLP and this time, and all the times that we’ve spent putting things together, it was a great bonding experience. I feel like that’s a great example for how I was able to bond with other classmates through these events.”

From the fun with constructing the showcase, to the excitement of the competition, to the quality spent of making new friendships, STLP was an overall outstanding experience for Eastside’s students. Without the exceptional talent provided by the contributors to the showcase, Eastside’s success in achieving a high ranking would not have been possible. Though the event is over, the pic1showcase isn’t finished yet; future school open houses around Kentucky will be giving students a glimpse of Eastside through its successful STLP presentation. The goal for the school is to get much more recruits for next year, and they believe the showcase will play a big part in reaching that achievement.
